Mosa. Sustainability.

Sustainability is an essential challenge for modern society. Royal Mosa, a leading tile manufacturer from the Netherlands, has made this challenge one of the company’s guiding principles. We believe this perfectly matches a product with the longevity associated with tiles and a company as long-established as Mosa - Mosa was founded in 1883. Mosa has transformed this challenge into concrete steps concerning its product, the production process and its employees. Our ambition is to make the way we do business as sustainable as possible, from cradle to grave, and even from cradle to cradle.

Mosa has invested in energy saving, reducing emissions, low-noise production and water management for many years now. We have also invested heavily in recycling processes and the responsible use of raw materials. Our ISO 14001 certificate guarantees this. And there is more to come.

CO2 reduction

In the last 10 years, Mosa has reduced its CO2 emissions by no less than 17%. New investments for a further reduction are planned, using techniques for reutilizing heat generated during the production process and creating energy by cogeneration.

Green Energy

Mosa uses Green Energy. All electricity used at the Mosa plants is derived from hydroelectric power station.

Recycling process: zero waste

Mosa floor-tiles are produced using our patented ‘Ultragres’ procedure. This is a double load system with top and body layers that are pressed isostatically to form a single fired mono-product. One advantage of this procedure is that the recycled content can be added to the body layer. This makes it possible for Mosa to use pre-and post-consumer waste to create a body layer and thus a tile of high quality. Mosa floor-tiles consist of 12 % to 45% recycled material, depending on the product. The pre-consumer recycling system is totally in place. Post-consumer recycling is under study and some preliminary trials should start shortly.

Local raw materials

Mosa sources most of its natural raw materials for tile production from local quarries. No less than 85% of our raw materials come from within a radius of 400 km. Mosa sets a recovery-plan requirement for the quarries concerned.

H2O management and purification

Mosa has its own water treatment plant. Nearly all waste-water is reused through the manufacturing process. At the porcelain floor-tile plant, this is already 100%. At the moment, Mosa is investing in more water-saving projects.

Reduced & clean air-emissions

Dust emissions at Mosa facilities have been reduced by 90%.

Recycled/recyclable packing material

All our paper packaging materials are made from recycled paper and are further recyclable. European transport of our products is on reusable ‘Europallets’, a pallet return system has been put in place. Mosa participates in the ‘Interseroh Recycling Program’ in Germany. All Intercontinental shipping is on special disinfected pallets. Mosa uses ‘Heat treatment certified pallets’ that are disinfected by heat and not by poisonous gas.

ISO 14001

Mosa’s ‘Environmental Management System’ is an integral part of the company’s management system, focusing on the control and improvement of its performance on environmental issues. The ‘Environmental Management System’ focuses structural attention on the environment in the management of the company, with two central principles:
• compliance with all legislation, regulations and control of environmental risks
• continuous improvement of our environmental performance.
ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard that describes the requirements of a good Environmental Management System. Mosa’s Environment Management System is ISO 14001 certified.

Life Cycle Assessment

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is also known as an ‘ecobalance’ or cradle-to-grave-analysis. It is the investigation and evaluation of the environmental impact of a given product or service caused or necessitated by its existence. Mosa tiles have a very long life cycle. Technically, Mosa floor tiles may be used for many hundreds of years without losing their looks or their technical quality.

High Energy Performance Coefficient

In Western Europe, it is obligatory for new houses to meet the so called ‘Energy Performance Norm’ (EPN). This norm is expressed as an Energy Performance Coefficient (EPC), which is an indicator for the energy efficiency of the building. The characteristics of the building are among the things that an EPC calculation takes into account. Modern techniques of heating and cooling such as underfloor heating or cooling are being increasingly used to meet this EPC. Tiles are a perfect partner for these techniques, and are clearly superior to other floor-coverings. The Dutch government has decided on a downward adjustment of the EPC in the housing sector from 1.0 to 0.8, thus making the norm even stricter. Tiles in combination with underfloor heating/cooling fulfill the demands of the new Dutch EPC.

‘Humanity has the ability to make development sustainable to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’
